The Faculty of Sciences is one of the inveterate faculties in scientific research and societal service. It has gained a distinguished rank among the University of Kufa Faculties for its significant scientific departments and notable importance to support the knowledge career. Among these departments is the Department of Lab Investigations. Although being among the most recent ones, this department was able to develop future plans and visions and build scientific and professional powers to enrich the credit of the different Iraqi foundations of both the private and public sectors. Some of these visions are endeavoring to initiate postgraduate studies for the masters and PhD. In addition, the department is working on cooperating and co-training with other researching and medical institutions and opening specialized labs in molecular and genetic studies in the department for training and researching and conducting complicated and modern tests. Moreover, the department is looking forward to following up with all the recent scientific advancements. This high level department is keeping up with graduating classes and preparing skilled and trained staffs that are willing to serve the best facilities to the society and other institutions as well as serving our beloved Iraq.
The Department in Brief
The Department of Lab Investigations was established in 2007-2008. 54 students were admitted to the first class, but the number has increased to 300 students for the four stages as today. The department is considered one of the large departments at the Faculty of Sciences and is considered the highest in regard to the GPA of students admitted. Two classes graduated from the department (2010-2011), and (2011-2012) classes. The first and third top students in the Faculty of Sciences were from the Lab Investigations Department besides being the third top students at the University of Kufa in general. The department has 22 faculty members including 9 PhD holders, 17 MSc. holders, as well as four instructors.
The Department has several well- equipped labs from well known global manufacturers to cover the practical side and applications of the theoretical material given to the students of all stages. These labs complement the image of the curriculum scientifically and theoretically. These labs support the undergraduate students as well as the faculty members to conduct research as well as graduation theses for senior students. Some of these labs are:
The study system in the Department of Lab Investigations is into two types: Semester (15 weeks) and annual operating for an academic year (30 weeks.)
The Department Vision
The Department of Lab Investigations is an effective tool to get the society needs effectively met regarding the specialized staffs to support the medical, researching, and academic institutions as well as exploiting the students and teachers’ efforts in scientific researching and practical and theoretical academics in the undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The quality of training and medical and health preparation is one of the priorities within future basics matching with the recent advancements by gaining technical skills and highly academic and scientific expertise.
The Department Mission
The Department of Lab Investigations was initiated in harmony with the society’s need for specialized service crews with high scientific standards and modern technical skills and preparing these crews to work in the researching and medical facilities and private sectors. However, the department has a forward clear message with determined ambition endeavoring to offer the best services and improve the faculty members and students in the researching field and cognitive area. The department aims at initiating the postgraduate studies in the department and also the society services and widening the scientific horizons with the other counterpart departments and related facilities to achieve a continuous fruits and high quality cooperation.
The Department Aims
The Department works on preparing specialized professional scientific cadres to work at the medical facilities and Health Ministry, public and private labs, and other related directorates. Some of the other aims are:
1- Developing the researching, scientific, and technical abilities of teachers and graduates and following up with the up to date advances around the world and motivating using the most recent methods in all related fields.
2- Working on establishing firm mutual research and scientific relations with the peering departments at the UoKufa University and other universities through seminars, training courses and workshops and exploiting these to improve the abilities and mutual benefits for the common good.
3- Offering the researching, scientific, and technical consultations to contribute to solving some of the scientific and technical problems in some of the related foundations.
4- The department is looking forward to achieving the proposed goals by crowning its scientific course with the postgraduate studies.
Work Opportunities for Our Graduates
The graduates of the Lab Investigations are awarded the BSc degree in Science of Lab Investigations. According to the specialization and nature of study, the graduates can work in several fields at the government sectors including the scientific educational foundations, health directorates, and medical areas. As well, they can work at the environmental fields due to the diagnosis training, testing procedures, and lab measures these graduates have gained.
The Department Activities
1- Preparing cadres of graduates with best scientific practical abilities in lab investigating.
2- Improving the research and scientific capacity of students.
3- Training the students in the official scientific affiliations on practicing their specialization in lab investigations.
4- Conducting and publishing studies in different scientific fields of medicine and environment.
5- Holding workshops, seminars, and training courses in different fields including the academic and professional training on modern technology and developed devices.
6- Conducting seminars on different diseases and their prevention and diagnosis especially regarding the contagious and emergency diseases in the country.
7- The department organizes two trips, one is in the first semester and the other is in the second semester.
8- Two scientific and cultural festivals in the second semester.
9- Scientific symposium on cholera during the first semester.
10- Periodic meetings with students speaking on various subjects during the academic year.
11- Students volunteer to clean up campaigns around the different facilities during the academic year.
12- Organizing mobile Labs in faculty.
