The Faculty of Science at the University of Kufa discussed a master’s thesis titled “A molecular study of antibiotic-resistant bacteria contaminating the hospital environment” by student Salam Razzaq Al-Zarfi from the Department of Environmental Sciences.
The thesis aimed to isolate and diagnose the bacteria that cause hospital infection by multiple methods, such as the chromium agar method.
The thesis included revealing the environmental factors affecting the growth of bacteria and various antibiotics and studying the genes responsible for bacterial resistance.
The study found that bacteria that are resistant to inappropriate environmental conditions are the same as bacteria resistant to antibiotics and carrying the studied genes.
The thesis recommended spreading health awareness to prevent the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, which causes resistance to bacteria, and the necessity of constant follow-up and periodic checks of the hospital environment to ensure that it is free of the bacteria that cause pollution.
