A master’s thesis in the Faculty of Science focuses on the evaluation of alpha particle emitters in cheese

A master’s thesis in the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Science
at the University of Kufa discussed determining the emitters of alpha
particles and some heavy elements in samples of cheese available in the
Iraqi markets, and estimating the risk factors resulting from their
consumption.
The thesis submitted by the student, Roaa Radi Moneim, included a
collection of about 72 samples of cheese imported from several countries
such as Iran, Turkey, Hungary, Egypt and Saudi Arabia with samples of
local cheeses manufactured in Iraq, for the purpose of studying their
suitability for human consumption and their danger to humans in terms of
radioactivity and poisoning by heavy elements.
The results of the thesis proved that most cheese samples do not
constitute a radiological hazard or poisoning with heavy elements,
especially in the Iraqi cheese samples.
The thesis recommended conducting periodic studies on cheese and
adopting the results of the current study as an applicable and comparable
database, and adopting it by the concerned institutions.
