A master’s thesis in the Department of Biology discussed the
determination of the effect of polymorphism of genes GSTM1, GSTT1
in leukemic patients and the effect of glutathione enzyme GSH on
The thesis, which was submitted by Maryam Essam Abdullah under
the supervision of Prof. Dr. Alaa Shaker Hantoush, included deleting
the GSTM1, GSTT1 genes from the patients’ samples, which led to a
decrease in the concentration of the glutathione enzyme, which is
important in protecting the body’s cells from free radicals and
oxidative stress in patients.
The results of the thesis concluded that deleting the GSTM1 and
GSTT1 genes is a risk factor in patients, as it causes an increased
risk of various types of cancer and several other diseases.
