Master’s thesis in the Department of Biology investigating the biological activity of the mint plant

A master’s thesis in the Department of biology investigated the efficiency of extracts of mint leaves and seeds and studying their biological activities.

The thesis presented by Amjad Hassan Jaber, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Karim Talib Khashan, aims to extract essential oils and chemical compounds from mint leaves and seeds and adopt them safely as antibiotics, study their chemical and physical properties, and test the inhibitory ability of these oils against bacteria that cause gingivitis.

The results of the thesis showed the ability of the chemical compounds extracted from the mint plant as antibiotics against the bacteria that cause gingivitis, and the identification of 31 chemical compounds in plant oils that were close to the international standards for oils.

The results also showed that Enterococcus bacteria were most affected by peppermint oils, while the least affected were Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria.
