A PhD thesis in the Department of Biology investigated the protective ability of curcumin extract against cardiotoxicity induced by cyclophosphamide.
The thesis submitted by PhD studnet Hala Baqer Thanoun, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Haider Salih Jaffat, aims to know the effectiveness of curcumin extract against cardiotoxicity induced by the drug cyclophosphamide by measuring some biochemical parameters related to antioxidants and cardiotoxicity. The thesis included the measurement of antioxidant enzymes and biomarkers related to cardiotoxicity such as interleukin-6 and troponin. It also included the study of histopathological changes of the organ of the heart, liver and kidney.
The results of the thesis showed that cyclophosphamide has an inhibitory effect on the activity of antioxidant enzymes, and on the contrary, curcumin extract had an effective protective effect against cardiotoxicity induced by cyclophosphamide.
